BIOGRAPHY
Jackie Jones is an American oil painter whose work reflects a lifelong connection to the
natural world, particularly the coastal landscapes and maritime traditions of New
England. Known for her sensitive interpretation of light, atmosphere, and the movement
of water, Jones paints both en plein air and in the studio, finding inspiration in the
changing moods of the sea, quiet harbors, and the character of the American
landscape.
Raised in Connecticut, Jones began her formal art education at the age of twelve,
attending Saturday painting classes with artist Joseph Gionfriddo in Gilead,
Connecticut. Gionfriddo, who had studied with American painters Guy Wiggins and
James Goodwin McManus, introduced her to the traditions of representational painting
and the importance of careful observation. These formative years helped establish a
lifelong appreciation for landscape painting and the natural world. Jones later earned a
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art in Old
Lyme, Connecticut, and an Associate of Arts degree in Graphic Design and Illustration
from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.
Jones draws inspiration from the rich artistic heritage of Old Lyme and Cape Ann,
particularly the work of American painters Willard Metcalf, Frederick Mulhaupt, and
Winslow Homer. Her paintings balance careful observation with a painterly approach,
emphasizing the relationships of light, color, and atmosphere. Whether depicting
breaking surf, working harbors, tranquil lily ponds, or the expansive landscapes of the
American West, she seeks to capture both the visual character and emotional
resonance of a place.
Maintaining studios in South Berwick, Maine, and East Hampton, Connecticut, Jones
travels extensively to paint from life. Her work has taken her from the rugged coastline
of Maine and the islands of New England to the mountains and deserts of the American
West and the Pacific coast.
Jones is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and an Artist
Member of the California Art Club. Her paintings have been included in national
exhibitions of Oil Painters of America, the Art Renewal Center International Salon, the
American Society of Marine Artists, and the California Art Club. She was an invited artist
at the 2026 Laguna Plein Air Painting Invitational in California.
Her work has received numerous distinctions, including Best Water in the PleinAir
Salon, recognition in the Art Renewal Center International Salon, and awards from the
Salmagundi Club of New York. One of her paintings was acquired for the permanent
collection of the Brinton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming.
In addition to her painting career, Jones is an instructor who shares her knowledge of
traditional drawing, painting, and plein air techniques through workshops and
demonstrations. She serves on the Board of Governors of the Rockport Art Association
& Museum in Massachusetts, where she is actively involved in its educational
programs.
