Cavalier Gallery announces the opening of our upcoming exhibition, Paul Oxborough: Recent Works. This exhibition will include more than 20 new paintings by the modern master, in the first one-man show for the artist in 7 years. With a brilliant eye for painting light, Oxborough captures impressions of contemporary culture with the skill of an Old Master.  A student of the French Academic tradition, Oxborough’s style is a meeting of impressionism and realism, expertly portraying a variety of subjects from interiors and portraits to outdoor figures and landscapes.

Oxborough’s observations of life preserve these singular, fleeting moments, offering to the observer a window through which to wonder about the story of the subject. As we look in on these old friends at the bar, a solitary diner, a museum guard standing at his post, a bartender mixing a cocktail, we wonder who they are, what they are thinking or talking about, or what their day was like. It also reminds us of the nights we sat at the bar or visited the museum or spent a quiet morning with family. As we face a new way of life, these images may come to represent a memoir of a bygone era.

In his approach to painting, Oxborough chooses not to focus on any particular theme, but in quiet reflections of the people and places he has encountered. Much in the way that late 19th or early 20th Century artists like Edouard Manet or Everett Shinn strove to capture life as it is, Oxborough’s compositions are an observation of modern life.  Not only do his works convey a reflection of the times, they honor their subjects with the same sensitivity that a master such as John Singer Sargent would have given to a formal portrait sitting.  Whether a bar scene, landscape, or intimate interior scene, each work has a luminosity that makes this artist’s works so distinctive.

Gallery President Ron Cavalier recently stated that Paul is one of the most talented painters of our generation, his work has an authenticity that is not only uniquely his own but that transcends representational contemporary art.  He is an artist who has received important critical acclaim and whose work is coveted by collectors far and wide. This exhibition is a must see for all.

Paul Oxborough has been honored with numerous works exhibited at both the British and Scottish National Portrait Galleries, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, as well as several other notable museums. Paul has had over a dozen solo shows and his work is included in collections world-wide.
